THIS IS WHY WE ARE HAPPY

How many of these blue skies of April and May have already been

recorded in images!

How many lyrics of Brazilian songs have touched deep in our soul!

And even so, there is always a new way of recording the same skies

and combining the same words.

Someone once said that, in painting, the two of us were like

Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos in music.

Clearly, an exaggeration. But yes, we formed one of those duos where

the one understands what the other thinks, sometimes even before

he thought it.

Were they the happiest years? In terms of work, yes, without a doubt. Sometimes I think that it was not even work, only an expression
of joy, a childlike thing.

In lives so brief, as ours are, having one or two encounters like this

is to win the lottery of feeling. This is why we are happy. And here,

in this small slice of a world of concentrated beauty, he is teaching

me again – just like he did thirty-some years ago – how to look.

I surrender, I yield myself. He knows everything. He is precise,

demanding and makes love overflow from the colors and images.

Silences, memories, time that passes too slow or too fast, a corner of sunshine, one or another person who passes by furtively,

one or another landscape that is glimpsed.

He knows how to take advantage of scenes nearly without color and

to dive fearlessly into other saturated ones. Unexpected geometries,

shadows at improbable angles – everything punctuated by the blue

of the sky that always enchants us.
